An Analysis of the Shapes of Interstellar Extinction Curves. Vi. the Near-ir Extinction Law

چکیده
We combine new HST/ACS observations and existing data to investigate the wavelength dependence of near-IR (NIR) extinction. Previous studies suggest a power-law form for NIR extinction, with a “universal” value of the exponent, although some recent observations indicate that significant sight line-to-sight line variability may exist. We show that a power-law model for the NIR extinction provides an excellent fit to most extinction curves, but that the value of the power, β, varies significantly from sight line-to-sight line. Therefore, it seems that a “universal NIR extinction law” is not possible. Instead, we find that as β decreases, R(V ) ≡ A(V )/E(B − V ) tends to increase, suggesting that NIR extinction curves which have been considered “peculiar” may, in fact, be typical for different R(V ) values. We show that the power law parameters can depend the wavelength interval used to derive them, with the β increasing as longer wavelengths are included. This result implies that extrapolating power law fits to determine R(V ) is unreliable. To avoid this problem, we adopt a different functional form for NIR extinction. This new form mimics a power law whose exponent increases with wavelength, has only 2 free parameters, can fit all of our curves over a longer wavelength baseline and to higher precision, and produces R(V ) values which are consistent with independent estimates and commonly used methods for estimating R(V ). Furthermore, unlike the power law model, it gives R(V )s that are independent of the wavelength interval used to derive them. It also suggests that the relation R(V ) = −1.36 ) E(B−V ) − 0.79 can estimate R(V ) to ±0.12. Finally, we use model extinction curves to show that our extinction curves are in accord with theoretical expectations, and demonstrate how large samples of observational quantities can provide useful constraints on the grain properties. CCM law properly represent all extinction curves ?
We present the analysis of a large sample of lines of sight with extinction curves covering wavelength range from near-infrared (NIR) to ultraviolet (UV). We derive total to selective extinction ratios based on the Cardelli, Clayton & Mathis (1989, CCM) law, which is typically used to fit the extinction data both for diffuse and dense interstellar medium. We conclude that the CCM law is able to...
متن کاملAn Analysis of the Shapes of Interstellar Extinction Curves. v. the Ir-through-uv Curve Morphology
We study the IR-through-UV wavelength dependence of 328 Galactic interstellar extinction curves affecting normal, near-main-sequence B and late O stars. We derive the curves using a new technique that employs stellar atmosphere models in lieu of unreddened ‘‘standard’’ stars. Under ideal conditions, this technique is capable of virtually eliminating spectral mismatch errors in the curves. In ge...

We present an analysis of 436 lines of sight with extinction data covering wavelength range from near-infrared (NIR) to ultraviolet (UV). We use J,H,K photometry from 2MASS database, the IR intrinsic colors from Wegner (1994), and UV extinction data from Wegner (2002). We exclude 19 lines of sight (4%) from the original sample because of suspected photometric problems. We derive total to select...

In this paper we present a new method for deriving UV-through-IR extinction curves, based on the use of stellar atmosphere models to provide estimates of the intrinsic (i.e., unreddened) stellar spectral energy distributions (SEDs), rather than unreddened (or lightly reddened) standard stars. We show that this " extinction-without-standards " technique greatly increases the accuracy of the deri...
متن کاملThe Near-Infrared Extinction Law in Regions of High AV
We present a spectroscopic study of the shape of the dust-extinction law between 1.0 and 2.2μm towards a set of nine ultracompact H ii regions with AV ∼ > 15 mag. We find some evidence that the reddening curve may tend to flatten at higher extinctions, but just over half of the sample has extinction consistent with or close to the average for the interstellar medium. There is no evidence of ext...
